Normangee ISD has taken decisive steps to reduce the tax burden on our valued taxpayers in an exciting move that directly benefits our community. We are thrilled to announce a reduction of 18 cents in the tax rate compared to the previous year, reducing the old rate of $1.34 to $1.16. This 18-cent reduction means that since 2019, NISD has reduced its tax rate by 30 cents, even with the passing of the 2022 bond!
At Normangee ISD, we're more than an educational institution; we're partners in responsible financial management. Being good stewards of taxpayer money is not just a goal but a core principle we uphold. This recent reduction, which comes in response to newly enacted legislation, should provide immediate property tax relief to our stakeholders.
This change holds significance beyond our district, as taxpayers across the state are poised to
exercise their voice in November. A vote to raise the homestead exemption to $100,000 offers
further potential for property tax relief. As the call for fair and equitable tax policies resonates
statewide, Normangee ISD stands united with fellow taxpayers in this endeavor.
However, the future of public education in Texas hangs in the balance as we approach a crucial
special session. The 88th legislature, regrettably, fell short of passing a new school finance bill,
a missed opportunity that has left a substantial and record surplus untouched. As we stand at
this juncture, we must come together to advocate for the support that our schools and students deserve.
NISD prides itself on its commitment to providing a high-quality education, but school districts
across Texas face an uphill battle without the necessary funding adjustments. While tax rates
have been compressed, providing much-needed relief to taxpayers, we must acknowledge the
flip side of this coin. Maintaining pace with inflation and addressing the rising costs of delivering
quality education has become more daunting than ever.
Normangee ISD, like many others, is confronting the repercussions of insufficient additional
funding. With a record surplus left unallocated, NISD is set to adopt a deficit budget of nearly
$300,000 for the coming fiscal year. This situation poses real challenges to maintaining the high standards of education our community expects, and our students deserve. The district's
commitment to fiscal responsibility has provided the capacity to absorb this deficit. However,
this coming special session must result in a new, substantial school finance bill providing the
necessary funding moving forward.
As we embark on this continued journey of fiscal responsibility, we maintain our unwavering
dedication to fostering positive relationships with students and parents, cultivating a secure
learning environment, and maintaining open lines of communication. We thank you for your
continued trust and support as we collectively work toward a brighter future for Normangee ISD and beyond.
