At the May 15th meeting, the NISD Board of Trustees welcomed their two newest members, Joshua Harris and Ronnie Sorters. Each trustee won their seat on the school board during the May election. “We are excited about our newly elected trustees and at the same time we are very grateful for the service of Mrs. DeAnn Morton who had served on the board for the last 9 years,” says Superintendent Mark Ruffin. Mr. Sorters is taking over for Mrs. Morton and Mr. Harris is filling the vacant seat left by the tragic passing of Mrs. Carole Martin.
Each of the new trustees were interviewed to help the community get to know them better.
Mr. Joshua Harris is a CPA currently working for a biotechnology company in College Station. He is married to Jennifer and they have three children, Jonathan (NHS Class of 2022), Steven (NHS Class of 2024), and Nolan (NHS Class of 2026). He holds a bachelors degree in Kinesiology from Texas A&M University and a masters degree in Accounting from the University of Houston.
Mr. Harris, why did you decide to run for the school board?
“With our short history in the district we have grown to love these schools and the staff that make it special. An opportunity came up for me to be involved even more with Normangee ISD. With my past experience in auditing and assisting school districts financially, I look forward to helping improve the district and working with the other board members. “ What do you look forward to most about serving as a board member for NISD? “I look forward to joining an already established school board and continue to see NISD be successful and improve. Thank you for the opportunity to lead.” What are you most proud of about Normangee ISD? “We chose to move our family to a smaller atmosphere for our kids education. Normangee ISD has welcomed our kids with open arms and provided opportunities beyond our expectations. I am proud to be a part of such a welcoming school district.” Mr. Ronnie Sorters was born and raised in this community, graduated from NHS in 1998, and has worked at Nucor for the last 18 years. He and his wife Erica, our school nurse, have a son Cole, who is a sophomore at Normangee High School. Mrs. Sorters is not the only family member that has worked at NISD, Ronnie’s Mom, Kim, worked at NISD for over 20 years and now he steps into service to the district as a school board member. Mr. Sorters, why did you decide to run for the school board? “I wanted to join the school board to help ensure that our children are best prepared for what comes after high school. I also want to help make sure that our teachers and other faculty members have all the tools necessary to do the best jobs they can do.” What do you look forward to most about serving as a board member for NISD? “I look forward to serving with a like minded group of people who are striving to make our school system even better.” What are you most proud of about Normangee ISD? “I’m most proud that Normangee ISD carries that small town atmosphere. Everyone is always willing to lend a hand and help each other out. Its like everyone is part of a big family at Normangee.” School Board Members are elected to serve 3 year terms. The NISD School Board meets the 2nd Monday of the month at the Dr. Bilsing Administration Building at 6:15 PM. |
